How Will My Seniors Years Look Differently From Yours?

As part of what is now referred to as the “sandwich generation”, many thoughts or concerns arise as to what our senior years will look like.  Do we want to age the way our parents did?  What  can we do differently if given the opportunity?  How can we prepare now to take the burden off of our children as we age in place?

When looking ahead to my senior years there are many concerns that go through my mind.  Where will I be residing ?  Have I saved enough money to support myself? Will I be in good health?  Are these questions and concerns the same ones that might now be keeping you up at night?

These questions are not ones I have all the answers to,  but I am now aware to start thinking about what steps I can take to ensure my safety in the future.

At this time, it is hard to know where I want to live in 10-15 years, but I do know it will be somewhere warmer than New Jersey. And for sure there will be plenty of pickleball courts available to allow for my obsession with the sport.  Now is the time to give thought to what type of lifestyle you might want  to live in the next 10-15 years.

My Health or anyone’s health in the future is anyone’s guess.  My family history is always a factor, but I intend to do my best to be healthy.  Playing pickleball,  exercising regularly and eating healthier will always be a part of my lifestyle.

As a Certified Aging In Place Specialist and Living In Place Professional, I am very aware of all of the tools to living a safer life.  Removing all obstacles, installing the proper Smart Technology, lighting, flooring, and a properly fitted bathroom and kitchen in my home will make everything safer as I age.  Everyone ages differently, so what I will need in my 70’s and beyond might be very different for you or a family member.

When meeting with new and prospective clients, together we work on a three-stage plan.  What does the client need NOW, what will  the client need SOON and what will the client need LATER to keep them safe while aging in place.  Planning for the proper modifications in advance is a must!   It does not do any good if the house is not properly prepared before the client really needs it to be.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ― Benjamin Franklin.

No one wants to see a family member struggle to live in the home they love.  NOW is the time to start the conversation to properly prepare the home to allow them to live there and age in place in a safer, healthier and more comfortable environment.
