The Importance of Smart Technology While Aging In Place

Covid changed how we worked, networked and learned for the past few years. Now things are better and I just went to the Cedia expo in Dallas. Continuing to grow and learn is essential! #aginginplace #livinginplace #seniorliving #homemodifications #seniorsafety #seniorsmatter #seniorlivingdesign

I just returned from Dallas where the Cedia Expo convened for three days. My reason for wanting to go was to continue to learn about products on the market to assist my clients to be able to remain in their homes safer and more comfortably.

What an experience it was for me to meet the vendors in person and get demonstrations on these products. I met up with an old neighbor who now lives there, and he introduced me to a vendor he worked with for many years. It happens that this company is local to me in Bergen County. How lucky am I to have this resource for my clients going forward.

Some of the vendors I have been speaking with had booths and were able to show me the improvements that they have made on their products.

Even nicer, I was able to meet Louie Delaware, President of The Living In Place Institute. When I became a Certified Living In Place Professional last year, it was all done virtually, so this was the first time I met him in person. He was demonstrating the tools that were used for me to learn how difficult it is for individuals with disabilities to do everyday chores with arthritis or visual issues.

I often give presentations, either virtually or in person on Aging In Place & Smart Technology for groups. One of my favorite things about these presentations is to be able to use pictures. Some of the slides show examples of homes not prepared for aging in place and what needs to be done to make it safer. Other slides show products that are available to make aging in place safer and more comfortable. As I am educating the audience on aging in place, it is always amazing to me how many in the audience react to the pictures, and did not realize how simple the modifications can be.

Learning is such an important tool in my profession, and I look forward to continuing to learn about all of the new ways to assist my clients.
